What is this?

With voice management you define which voice sections exist in your choir. Voices are the basis for pretty much everything that happens organizationally in Chorilo: members are assigned to a voice, sheet music is sorted by voice, sectional rehearsals address only a selection, and seat plans at concerts often orient by them.

Typical configurations:

  • Mixed choir: soprano, alto, tenor, bass (classical SATB)
  • Women''s choir: soprano 1, soprano 2, mezzo, alto
  • Men''s choir: tenor 1, tenor 2, baritone, bass 1, bass 2 (TTBB)
  • Chamber choir / vocal ensemble: fine-grained down to solo roles
  • Children''s choir: high / middle / low voices
  • Instrumental ensemble: soprano sax, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet etc.

How to create voices

  1. Open your choir and go to Administration > Voices & roles.
  2. In the "Voices" tab you see all currently defined voices.
  3. Click "Add voice" and enter name, short form and optionally a color.
  4. Sort the voices via drag and drop in the desired order (e.g. soprano first, then alto, tenor, bass).
  5. Save the changes.

What you set per voice

  • Name (e.g. "Soprano 1")
  • Short form (e.g. "S1") — for compact displays
  • Color — helps visually in the seat plan and member list
  • Description (optional, e.g. "High soprano voice, solo roles")
  • Order (for display)

Where voices are used

  • Member profiles: every member has exactly one voice assigned (or "no voice" for support people).
  • Events: sectional rehearsals can invite individual voices only.
  • Sheet music: every piece has a PDF per voice. Members only see their voice.
  • Seat plans: members are positioned by voice in the concert hall.
  • Statistics: evaluate attendance per voice.

Permission

You need the permission ensemble.edit to manage voices. By default the owner and choir director have this access.

Tips

  • Plan the voice structure carefully — changing it is possible, but every change causes maintenance work on existing sheet music and members.
  • Keep the number of voices manageable — 4 to 8 voices is the right amount in most choirs. Too many make management unclear.
  • Use colors deliberately — in the seat plan and member list they help immediately recognize the voice section.
  • Create "no voice" members as board/auxiliary members — for example music librarian without a singing voice. They still get all events but no sheet music assignments.

Frequently asked questions

Which voices are created by default?
Depending on the choir type. Mixed choir starts with soprano, alto, tenor, bass. Men's choir with tenor 1/2, bass 1/2. You can adjust, add or delete the standard voices any time.
Can I create subgroups like "soprano 1" and "soprano 2"?
Yes. You can define voices fine-grained — for example soprano 1, soprano 2, mezzo, alto 1, alto 2. Unusual voices like baritone, counter-tenor or pure solo roles are also possible.
What happens if I delete a voice with members still assigned?
Chorilo warns you beforehand and suggests assigning the affected members to another voice or temporarily to "no voice". Only then can the voice be deleted.
