What is this?

With Edit message you can change a message you already sent — e.g. to fix a typo, add a forgotten link or smooth out an ambiguous wording. The edited version is shown to all participants of the chat with a discreet "edited" hint.

How to edit a message

  1. Open the chat with the message to be edited.
  2. Web: right-click your message and choose Edit.
  3. App: long-press the message and tap Edit in the action menu.
  4. Change the text in the input field that appears.
  5. Tap Save or confirm with Enter.

The changed message appears immediately in the chat — both for you and all other participants.

Permission

You need the permission chat.create to edit your own messages. You can only change your own messages, never those of other members.

Tips

  • Use the edit function sparingly. If you want to change content completely, it is more transparent to write a new message instead of changing the original meaning later.
  • For pure typos editing is the ideal way — no one has to send a correction message after.
  • If the message was completely wrong, rather delete it and write a new one — that is more honest than a strong content change.

Frequently asked questions

Do others see that I edited the message?
Yes. Edited messages get the hint "edited" with timestamp. The original text is no longer shown.
Can I edit any message?
You can only edit your own messages. Messages of other members cannot be changed.
Is there a time limit?
No. You can edit your messages any number of times and without time limit — that helps fix older typos later as well.
