Delete chat

What is this?

With Delete chat you remove a chat from your overview. For a 1:1 chat the chat only disappears for you — the other participant still has the history. For a group chat you can, as admin, delete the chat completely for all participants or just leave the group yourself.

How to delete a 1:1 chat

1. Open the chat you want to delete.
2. Tap the menu at the top right (three dots or gear icon).
3. Choose Delete chat.
4. Confirm the deletion in the dialog.

The chat disappears immediately from your overview. The other participant keeps the chat in their list — when you message the member later, the chat starts from scratch from your view.

How to leave or delete a group chat

• Leave group chat: you are removed from the participant list, the chat disappears from your overview. Other participants continue chatting without you.
• Delete group chat completely (admin only): the chat is deleted with all messages, attachments and reactions for all participants.

The path is the same: open chat, menu top right, choose Leave or Delete chat.

Permission

You need the permission chat.create to delete or leave chats. To completely delete a group chat you must additionally be admin of the group.

Tips

• Mute instead of delete: if a chat just bothers you, muting is usually the better solution — the chat stays and you can rejoin at any time.
• Before final deletion of a group chat, save important content (e.g. download photos or PDFs) that may still be needed later.
• For active groups as admin rather hand over admin rights to someone else than deleting the chat completely.
• Leave instead of delete when you no longer want to participate but the group should keep existing for others.
