Edit group chat name

What is this?

With Edit group name you change the name of an existing group chat. Useful when the purpose of the group has shifted (e.g. after a new concert project) or when the original name is no longer fitting.

How to change the name

1. Open the group chat in the web version.
2. Click the group name at the top of the chat to open the group settings.
3. Choose Edit group name.
4. Enter the new name in the input field.
5. Save the change by clicking Save or pressing Enter.

The new name appears immediately for all participants in the chats overview and in the chat itself. A short system message announces the change — so it stays traceable who changed the name when.

Permission

You need the permission chat.create and must be admin of the group chat to change the name. Regular participants see the name but cannot edit it.

Tips

• Choose a name that clearly reveals the current purpose — e.g. "Board 2026" rather than just "Board" if the composition changes per term.
• Avoid frequent name changes, that makes finding the chat in the overview harder.
• On a topic shift of the group, a new group chat is often better than renaming the old one — that way the original history stays thematically clean.
