Open chat
Open a chat from the overview to read the entire history, write new messages or react to existing ones.
What is this?
When you open a chat you see the entire message history — sorted from oldest to newest message at the bottom. You can reply directly, react to individual messages or read older posts. Both 1:1 chats and group chats work the same way.
How to open a chat
- Go to the chats overview in the main menu or the Chat tab in the app.
- Tap the desired chat in the list.
- Read the history — the latest message is at the bottom, older messages are loaded by scrolling up.
- Write a reply directly in the input field at the bottom.
In the web version the chat opens next to the overview so you can switch between several chats in parallel. In the app the chat opens as its own view; you go back to the overview with the back arrow.
What you see in the chat
- Profile picture and name of the member (1:1) or group name with participant count (group)
- Message history with timestamps, read receipts and reactions
- Input field for new messages, attachments and emojis
- Menu at the top right for chat settings like mute, manage participants or delete chat
Permission
You need the permission chat.view to open chats and read messages. By default all members have this. For group chats you must also be a participant of the group to see and open the chat.
Tips
- Long-press a message (app) or right-click (web) to call up actions like react, edit or delete.
- Use the search in chat to quickly find an older message — especially helpful for long histories.
- Mark important chats as favorite so they always appear at the top of your overview.
