What is this?

With Reactions you can respond to a single message in the chat with an emoji — e.g. a thumbs-up, a heart or a laughing smiley. Reactions are ideal to quickly signal "Got it" or "I like" without flooding the chat with short replies like "Okay" or "Thanks".

How to react to a message

  1. Open the chat with the corresponding message.
  2. Web: hover over the message and click the smiley icon that appears.
  3. App: long-press the message and choose an emoji from the appearing bar.
  4. Choose an emoji from the quick selection or open the full picker via the plus.

The reaction appears immediately under the message — with the count of members who used the same emoji. On tap you see who reacted how.

Permission

You need the permission chat.view to react to messages. By default all members who can participate in the chat have this.

Tips

  • Use reactions instead of short replies — that saves many unnecessary notifications in group chats.
  • Thumbs up is universal for "Okay, got it". A heart expresses agreement or appreciation.
  • In informal polls you can use reactions for a quick mood check — e.g. thumbs up/down on a question.
  • For formal polls in group chats rather use a notification with a poll — there every vote is traceable.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sender get a notification when I react?
Yes. Reactions trigger a discreet push notification at the sender so they see who reacted. In group chats notifications are bundled.
Can I set multiple reactions per message?
Yes. You can set any number of different emojis as reaction. Per emoji each member counts only once.
How do I undo a reaction?
Just tap the same emoji under the message again — your reaction is then removed.
