Upload license for piece

Store performance rights and license documents directly on the piece. So with copyrighted works you have all proof in hand.

What is this?

With Upload license for piece you store on the piece the proof that you may legally perform or duplicate it. That is important for:

  • Copyrighted works (composer still alive or death less than 70 years ago)
  • Pop arrangements and modern compositions
  • Publishers requiring a license for public performance
  • Duplication of the score (copies for members)

That way for a publisher inquiry or a GEMA check you have all proof in hand immediately.

How to upload a license

  1. Open the piece through the sheet music overview.
  2. Scroll to the License area on the detail page.
  3. Click Upload license.
  4. Enter the license data:
    • Licensor (publisher, composer, platform)
    • License number or code
    • Valid from and to (if time-limited)
    • Type of license (performance right, duplication, arrangement)
    • Number of allowed performances (if limited)
  5. Upload the license document as PDF or image.
  6. Save the license. It appears immediately in the piece detail.

What else you can store

  • License code for external verifiability (see Verify license code)
  • Notes on the licensor — e.g. contact, phone, email
  • Link to the online contract if signed digitally
  • Multiple licenses for different uses (performance separately from duplication)

Permission

To upload you need the sheet_music.edit permission. License documents themselves are only visible to editors so that contract data (prices, contract partners) is not viewable by every member. Members only see the "licensed" status.

When you need a license

  • For public performances of protected works (concert with or without entry fee)
  • For audio recordings and videos with the piece (YouTube, streaming)
  • For duplicating the score (copies for all members)
  • For your own arrangements of protected works (arrangement right needed)

For public domain works (Bach, Mozart, Schubert, traditional folk songs) no license is needed — also not for performances or copies. Note: modern arrangements of old works can be protected again.

Tips

  • Enter license data right when uploading the piece — later you easily forget.
  • Always enter the expiration date if the license is time-limited. Chorilo reminds you automatically before expiry.
  • Use speaking license numbers in the note — e.g. "Bosse-Verlag, contract 2024-117" — so you find the license also outside Chorilo.
  • Check well in time before concerts that all protected pieces have a valid license.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license for every piece?
No. Works in the public domain (e.g. classical folk songs or music by older composers) need no license. For copyrighted works a license is recommended or even required — depending on use and country.
What if the license expires?
You can store an expiration date. Chorilo reminds you in time before expiry so you can renew the license or take the piece out of the active repertoire.
Do members see the license documents?
Members see that a license is stored and the piece may be used under license. The uploaded document itself is only visible to members with edit rights — sensitive contract data stays protected.
